The Vice President of the United States is the second highest-ranking official in the U.S. government, after the President. The Vice President's primary role is to support the President and to be ready to take over as President in case the President dies, resigns, or is removed from office.
There have been 49 Vice Presidents of the United States since the office was created in 1789. The first Vice President was John Adams, who served under George Washington. Since then, Vice Presidents have come from a variety of backgrounds and have played important roles in American history.
