Until 1995 Ethiopia was divided into Provinces, further subdivided into awrajjas or districts. They were replaced by regions (kililoch) and two chartered cities with the adoption of the 1995 constitution.
Ethiopia is divided into 9 regions and 2 administrative citites. Regions are further divided into zones. Zones are further divided into districts(woreda). Districts are futher divided into municipalities (kebeles).
Districts or woreda (Amharic: ወረዳ?) (also spelled wereda) are collected together into zones, which form a region.
Districts which are not part of a zone are Special Districts and function as autonomous entities.
