- In the early 20th century, the island of Ireland had 32 counties.
- After the partition in 1922, the six northern counties became Northern Ireland, and the rest of Ireland became the Republic of Ireland.
- Some counties were merged or split over time, resulting in changes to their boundaries and the creation of new counties.
- Currently, there are 35 counties and county-equivalent areas.
