Japan has three levels of government: national, prefectural, and municipal. The national government is the highest level and makes decisions for the entire country.
Below the national government, there are 47 prefectures. Each prefecture has its own government and is responsible for managing its own affairs. Six of these prefectures are further divided into smaller regions called subprefectures.
